I find the general view of a community like the SEO community… Hilarious.

The online marketing tips they are giving to customers, are the same tips that they are using for their own business.  The problem is, that those tips are to boost a business.  Those tips are not the business… which is what you are doing.

Think of it this way..

I help businesses get ranked higher on a google search.  They are already a reliable business, and have customers.  They want more, that is your job.

My friend Patrick owns a business.  He gets customers, and turns a profit.  He wants to get MORE customers, so he hires me to ensure that happens.  I do my job, using the methods I am familiar with, and his business is now visible to a larger market, more attention, more sales.  Simple.  He HAS a product, it is good.  He runs his business, I helped him out.

I own a business.  I have already used MY methods to boost my business, this much is obvious.  However, if this is all I do for my business.. I am shooting myself in the foot.  That would mean that everyone I work for will reach more people than my own business… Which seems like it would make it hard for me to get hired.  I need to go through the regular motions of a business in order for everything to fall into place the way they should.

IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE ME (and I am sure many don’t)

Last month:

Site A:

50 hits a day.

0 RSS Subscribers.

Page Rank 4/10

Site B:

300 hits a day.

175 RSS Subscribers.

Page Rank 0/10

Anyone in their right mind can tell that the work that needs to be done is completely different, and this is the problem most SEO beginners encounter.  The marketing and traffic aspects have been taken care of, you now need to fill in the rest of the gaps before you arrive at your final destination.

If site A gets all of the attention site B did, it would rank much higher, so you can then assume B would need some of what A is having.  This brings us back to ‘the motions’

Localization takes care of this.  Marketing for the web grossly ignores local advertising.  Web 2.0 or social marketing can address these issues.  Dwigger allows a degree of localization to both Digg and Twitter. Twitter itself, used on the iPhone (Twinkle) allows you to specify what radius you would like to read from.

Hunt out those sites which let you choose a country, or state/(province??) to socialize with.  Go to events/conferences.  Meet people! No more marketing, build your social network up.

You will thank yourself for it later.

Have you seen this picture yet today!?

Didn’t think so.  That is my point.

(as a side note, i want to do this through the building i work in as well)

 Are you limiting your business?

Are you losing customers because of a narrow minded approach?

Your marketing campaign definitely is, so what are the best ways to close the gap?

Almost every company is missing a vast amount of coverage in their marketing efforts.  For example, I know many companies that are exclusively advertising with billboards, when that dollar could have gone so much further in different marketing styles.

This applies on the internet as well.  Singular big announcements are by far the best way to grab a huge amount of attention in today’s social media world.  So rather than spending that $500 on print advertising or copy, use it to purchase a prize, and run a contest on your site!  That will get more attention, and if your site delivers quality information / goods, you will retain some of those views.

Maybe, you just aren’t looking in the right places.  I really do feel sorry for you if you have not heard of these sites, but just in case… check out:

Stumble Upon

I can name many many more, but those will get you going if you haven’t been to them before.  Maybe you are ignoring one of those, in that case go out and make it explode.

Marketing is no longer about calling everyone up and seeing if anyone wants to buy.  It is changing to a world where if you have done your job, they know about you.  If you provide quality, then they will come to you.

– Do something to grab everyone’s attention, something you would find exciting!

– When you have their attention, dazzle them
